When this piece was first designed, a friend asked what flower it was meant to be. The honest answer is that it is not any single, specific flower. It draws on the idea of “a smile at the sight of a flower,” a phrase used to describe a quiet, wordless understanding. The carving represents that feeling more than any particular bloom, meant to convey a sense of calm and beauty rather than botanical accuracy. The wooden shaft takes a rounded form within a squared outline, giving it a touch of quiet strength, and its simplicity pairs with the intricate flower carving to create an interesting rhythm between restraint and detail.
The flower ornament is made from moose antler, tea dyed to give it an aged, antique finish, with 925 silver detailing that has also been treated for a weathered look. The shaft is crafted from the black sandalwood or ebony and sourced from Africa. The hairpin measures approximately 20 cm in length, with a tolerance of about 5 mm.
Please note that because antler density varies naturally from piece to piece, the result of the tea dyeing process will differ slightly across each hair stick, and no two are exactly alike. As with all our hand carved wooden hair sticks, small variations in shape and visible tool marks are part of its handmade character rather than a flaw. For daily wear, avoid prolonged water exposure.
Regarding the moose antler itself, we select material with the highest density available, though the core of the antler is naturally somewhat less dense than the outer layer. As shown in the images, the color is not a pure white but includes natural variations in off white tones, along with small internal spots that may not be visible from the surface. These are natural characteristics of the material rather than defects.
