Among the most refined carved wooden hair sticks in the China Wood Carving Museum collection, this April Peony hairpin belongs to the Twelve Floral Months Series, in which each of twelve carved hair sticks carries the soul of a seasonal flower. The peony motif is rendered through traditional bas-relief carving, then finished with copper wire inlay and layered hand-painted enamel: copper threads rise in subtle relief, and muted, antiqued pigments bloom across the warm lacquered surface with an unhurried, rustic beauty.
Shaped from Chinese Zitan wood prized across centuries for its iron-like density, silk-fine grain, and deep mirror polish, each piece is handcrafted by artisans working under the guidance of intangible cultural heritage inheritors at China Wood Carving Museum, which draws on over a thousand years of Chinese woodcarving tradition. Dozens of manual steps from timber selection and shaping to inlay, painting, and final polish are carried out entirely by hand. The result is a hairpin that holds its depth quietly: cool and composed to the touch, luminous in low light, refined without ornament.
These chinese style hair pins are designed to complement Hanfu, Qipao, and contemporary new Chinese style dress, carrying the classical sensibility of the imperial court and the unhurried elegance of scholarly culture. As a wood carving gift, this hairpin speaks without flourish, a piece meant to be worn, handled, and understood slowly over time.
Care & Maintenance
This hairpin is crafted from solid natural wood, which means no two pieces are identical. Variations in color, grain, knots, mineral lines, and surface markings are inherent characteristics of the material and are not considered defects. Natural wood is also sensitive to changes in temperature and humidity, and may show slight expansion, fine lines, or surface checking over time. These are normal expressions of a living material, not signs of poor quality.
Avoid soaking the hairpin in water or leaving it in damp, humid, or excessively hot environments for extended periods. When cleaning, rinse briefly under running water, wipe dry immediately with a soft cloth, and allow it to air dry in a cool, well-ventilated place away from direct sunlight and sudden temperature changes.
To keep the wood in good condition, apply a small amount of natural plant oil such as olive oil or walnut oil to the surface from time to time, leave it to absorb, then buff gently with a soft cloth. This is especially recommended after the hairpin comes into contact with water. Regular light oiling helps maintain the wood’s natural luster and reduces the effects of moisture fluctuation over time.
