Craftsmanship rooted in artisanal devotion. Materials chosen with uncompromising care.
The front of this wooden hairpin features a natural yellow butterfly shell, a material long regarded as a symbol of wealth, family harmony, and enduring good fortune. Its organic texture and warm luminescence reward every angle, a quiet and unhurried beauty that moves with the wearer.
The pin is paired with emperor-grade cinnabar beads, their deep red lending a regal accent that anchors the traditional aesthetic with richness and warmth. Cinnabar carries auspicious meaning in Chinese culture, evoking good fortune and flourishing vitality. A ruyi copper clasp connects the pendant below, adding a final wish for smooth sailing and fulfilled intentions.
About the Wood
Zitan wood shares the key characteristics of East African blackwood and ranks among the rarest species under China’s national rosewood standard. Its air-dry density reaches 1.25 to 1.33 g/cm³, and at a hardness that surpasses steel, it sinks in water. The distinctive depth of this black hairpin comes from zitan’s heartwood, a rich purple-brown threaded with dark striations, its fine grain running smooth as satin beneath the fingertips.
Naturally rich in oils, zitan resists corrosion without any lacquer or finish, its deep luster emerging from the wood itself. Over time, this wooden hairpin develops the warm, fragrant quality and rich patina that only years of wear can produce.
Craftsmanship
From raw timber to finished form, each hairpin passes through dozens of stages of hand-refinement, polished layer by layer using 7,000-grit sandpaper until the surface achieves a mirror-grade smoothness, clear enough to reflect the face. It glides through hair without catching or snagging, restoring the refined elegance of classical craftsmanship. The enamel colors graduate naturally like the wash of gemstone pigment, moving from pale to deep in layered gradations, as though the full bloom of late spring has been distilled and held in a single hairpin for women.
