Hand carved from solid Zitan wood (East African Blackwood, Dalbergia melanoxylon), one of China’s nationally recognized Hongmu hardwoods, these 18cm carved wooden hair sticks are finished without lacquer or dye, preserving the wood’s natural grain, density, and deep color.

The design draws from the concept of “Si Xiang Gui Yi,” rooted in the I Ching and Taoist tradition. In the Book of Changes, the Two Forms give rise to the Four Symbols: lesser yang, greater yang, lesser yin, and greater yin, the four essential states of yin and yang. “Four Forms Return to One” extends this idea across Taoist philosophy, traditional Chinese medicine, and classical cosmology, describing how four fundamental elements, directions, or states converge back into a single unified source. Many expressions, one origin.

The carving translates this idea into form: four intertwining figures spiral around the hand carved hair stick, evoking the unfolding of one into four and the return of four into one.
