A Glimpse of Majesty — Frankfurt Cathedral

FRANKFURT CATHEDRAL

2-3 HOURS
2025/09/07

Even from a photograph, the Frankfurt Cathedral, or Kaiserdom, exudes solemn grandeur. Its soaring Gothic arches, built from red sandstone, command attention, while shafts of colored light stream gently through the tall stained‑glass windows, casting a sacred glow upon the vast interior. This cathedral witnessed the coronations of ten emperors of the Holy Roman Empire, earning it the illustrious title of Imperial Cathedral.

Its main tower rises about 95 meters high. Climbing the 332 steps to the top rewards you with a sweeping panorama of the city nourished by the River Main. Like much of Frankfurt itself, the cathedral is both ancient and reborn — much of what stands today was painstakingly reconstructed after the devastation of war.

At the visual heart of the nave stands the high altar, where a sculpted Christ on the cross brings the story of the Passion vividly to life. Nearby, an impressive array of pipe organs bridges tradition and modernity — not merely instruments for religious ceremony, but vital voices in Frankfurt’s musical landscape.

Step outside, and you find yourself at the Römerberg, the beating heart of Frankfurt’s Old Town. In the square’s center stands a statue of Themis, the Greek goddess of justice and law, holding her scales with poised resolve — a reminder of the city’s long‑standing reverence for fairness and order.

Facing the cathedral across the square is the Frankfurter Römer, the city’s historic town hall. Rather than a single structure, it comprises three adjoining Gothic‑style buildings, their iconic stepped façades instantly recognizable and often featured on local souvenirs. Once the site of imperial coronation banquets, its granite façade is adorned with elaborate carvings and decorative stonework — a testament to the civic pride that has shaped Frankfurt through the centuries.
