This handmade horse brooch is inspired by a Tang Sancai glazed ceramic horse, a rare type admired for its deep, lacquer like shine and the striking “snowy hooves” contrast. The original work was made from kaolin clay and formed in a mold. Except for the face, mane, tail, and hooves, the horse was covered in a rich black glaze with a smooth, luminous finish. Details such as the neatly trimmed mane, the tail tied and lifted upward, and the fully rendered tack reflect the refined yet powerful style associated with Tang imperial horses.

The ceramic reference also captures the broader cultural backdrop of the era. With the Silk Road connecting East and West, prized horses from the Western Regions entered the imperial court. The typical Tang court horse is portrayed with a long neck, compact head, prominent chest muscles, and a strong, robust build. The saddle and harness are depicted with care, including leather straps with square patterns, a saddle that appears wrapped in green silk, an oval saddle pad with dotted motifs, and a net like mudguard. As Guo Ruoxu wrote, “During the Kaiyuan and Tianbao eras of the Tang, after long years of peace, people favored plumpness, and horses were adorned with three floral ornaments,” a vivid reflection of the courtly taste behind this style.

Designed for versatile styling, it can be worn on a lapel, collar, scarf, or coat to elevate everyday outfits, and it can also be used as a traditional front fastening ornament. The piece features a detachable top clasp, allowing you to wear the horse motif on its own or as a layered two piece accessory with added movement, decorative without feeling overly ornate.
