Düsseldorf is quite a small city with limited attractions, but these two art museums are noteworthy. Located next to each other in the old town, K20 showcases 20th-century art, while K21, as its name suggests, features 21st-century art. The exhibits primarily consist of sculptures, paintings, and installations. Previously, these buildings served as the offices for the North Rhine-Westphalia state parliament. After extensive renovations, they have become popular social media check-in spots. The atrium and surrounding corridors are designed with visual partitions, preventing a full view of the building’s structure. The new glass roof transforms the formerly dark and gloomy classical architecture, making it feel as though you are fully immersed in Düsseldorf’s sky, filled with fresh air. This sensation is especially pronounced after viewing the typically dim art exhibits below, providing a refreshing and liberating contrast, despite being indoors.
Photography Spots: The corridors on the 2nd and 3rd floors, and several arched windows, are excellent for taking photos.
Ticket Prices:
There are three types of tickets:
Basement and 2nd-3rd floors – around €10.
2nd-3rd floors only – €8.
2nd-3rd floors and top floor – another price tier.
Visiting just the main 2nd-3rd floor exhibit is sufficient for great photos. The basement features ghost-themed exhibits, which seem to be a popular theme in Germany. I saw similar exhibitions at the Pinakothek der Moderne, so I opted not to visit the basement this time.
