The Lost Kingdom – Hangzhou Oriental Culture Park

HANGZHOU・HANGZHOU ORIENTAL CULTURE PARK
2-4 HOURS
2022/04/11

This is undoubtedly one of Hangzhou’s rare and unique hidden gems. Its low popularity can be attributed to three main factors: first, the ticket price is high at 80 CNY per person. When I visited, there was a discount, but the original price exceeded 100 CNY. Second, its remote location—15 kilometres from both the urban areas of Xiaoshan and Hangzhou—with no metro access. Visitors must either take a bus, taxi or drive. Third, some areas of the park are still under renovation.

Key Features:
The park is primarily designed for religious believers and follows the principles of the I Ching (Book of Changes) and Feng Shui. It is strategically located at the confluence of three rivers: the Qiantang, Fuchun, and Puyang. The park is divided into eight zones: Century Plaza, Buddhist Zone, Taoist Zone, Confucian Zone, Oriental Resort Area, Grasslands, World Exotic Flowers and Fruits Garden, and Shanrui Scenic Area. The incense offerings are quite vibrant, particularly concentrated around the main hall and the Three Rivers Buddha Tower.

Recommended Photo Spots:
On either side of the entrance are two stone carvings: one of the God of Longevity, and the other unidentified, both quite distinctive. A short walk inside leads to the Guanyin Pool, a round pool flanked by two unique Western-style buildings. Further ahead is a golden structure reminiscent of Chiang Mai, offering a perfect opportunity to take photos that could pass for being in Thailand. If you have a drone, you can capture a stunning aerial view of the Taiji Platform located at the far end of the park, near a 9-meter-tall statue of Confucius—something you won’t find in other scenic spots.

Opening Hours:
8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The park closes relatively early, so if you plan to stay longer, it’s possible to exit through a side gate after 5 PM. However, it’s recommended not to leave after 5 PM for safety reasons.

Outfit Tips:
A minimalist or traditional Chinese style will complement the scenery well. Light-coloured clothing is ideal, as most of the background here is grey, which helps highlight the wearer.

Best Time to Visit:
Summer, when the park is lush and green. In winter, the landscape turns grey and barren. Now is the perfect time to visit, so hurry and explore!
