Some may have visited the China Academy of Art (CAA) and remarked that it wasn’t particularly special, with trendy shops drawing more attention. However, those in the know understand that the Xiangshan campus is the renowned work of Chinese architect Wang Shu, the first Chinese citizen to win the Pritzker Architecture Prize, often referred to as the “Nobel Prize” of architecture. The scale and design of the Xiangshan campus are truly impressive. Wang Shu designed the campus as an open architectural space, harmonizing with the natural contours of the surrounding hills. The corridors and walkways serve as visual links, weaving the inner and outer structures together.
CAA is also a member of China’s “Double First-Class” initiative, with a rich history of legendary artists such as Pan Tianshou, Lin Fengmian, Huang Binhong, and Chen Zhifo. The campus is home to the China Design Museum and the Folk Art Museum, making it feel like a world apart from ordinary schools.
Strolling through the campus reveals a blend of winding paths and hidden corners, with each step offering a new perspective. Spending your university years in such a beautiful environment is truly a blessing. The Liangzhu campus is set to open soon, and the anticipation is palpable. This is hands down my favourite university in Hangzhou.
How to Get There:
Take Line 6 to the Xiangshan campus station, exit at Gate B, and walk for about 5 minutes. Upon entering, you’ll be greeted by the stunning China Design Museum. The campus was previously open to the public, but due to pandemic restrictions, non-students are currently not allowed to enter. However, the China Design Museum remains open to visitors. Let’s hope the pandemic ends soon.
