A Reflection on Independent Travel in Yunnan (Xizhou Ancient Town, Lijiang Old Town, and Baisha Ancient Town)

YUNNAN・DALI & LIJIANG

3-5 HOURS
2024/03/12

Dali and Lijiang: cities of healing and serendipitous encounters. It’s said, “Take your loved one to Dali; take your ex to Lijiang.” Young people, yearning for love, flock to these romantic towns to experience their poetic charm or heal from heartbreak. Upon reflection, however, one finds similar ancient towns and markets selling an idealized notion of romance and youth. Few delve into the history of the Mu clan’s rule in Lijiang’s Old Town (Image 1). Many prefer capturing memories in Xizhou’s rice fields and mud walls (Image 2). The term “assembly-line princess” reflects young people’s dilemma and aspirations. Yet, the desire to preserve one’s best moments is natural. Life’s matters often lack clear right or wrong; perspectives differ. One can appreciate Yunnan’s ancient architecture (Image 3) and hidden staircases (Image 4), or arrange a moonlit photoshoot wearing Bai or Miao headdresses. Some say life lacks inherent meaning; perhaps documenting it adds significance.
