Inspired by the Famille Rose Fasting Plaque from the Qianlong period of the Qing dynasty, this piece reinterprets an ancient warning token worn during fasting rites. Shaped like a gourd cross-section, it features matching decoration on both sides, framed by raised ridges along the inner and outer edges. Against a yellow-glazed ground, a scrolling floral band of assorted blossoms is painted in red, green, blue, and other colors, while an orange silk ribbon wraps the narrowed “waist” and drapes down on both sides. The two circular panels at the top and bottom are covered with white glaze and inscribed in regular script with the characters “斋戒” meaning “fasting,” while the reverse bears the Manchu script for “fasting,” executed in a neat and steady hand. The plaque exemplifies an elegant and delicate craftsmanship, and reflects a refined fusion of Chinese and Western painting styles.
