Inspired by Chengdu Museum’s Shan Hai Jing (The Classic of Mountains and Seas) shadow puppet collection, the leaping carp magnet magnet reimagines the ancient tale of the gold and silver carps who dared leap the Dragon Gate. Swallowing a sacred pearl mid-flight, their heads transformed into dragons while their bodies remained fish—a hybrid immortalized as the mythical Ao Fish (鳌鱼). The male boasts golden scales and a gourd-shaped tail; the female shimmers silver with lotus-petal fins. Their story symbolizes relentless ambition, now captured in this contemporary collectible.

The design is directly inspired by a shadow puppet artwork in the Chengdu Museum’s collection. The complete fish form is recreated and accented with lantern motifs from traditional shadow play. Through redrawing and reinterpretation, the designer brings this auspicious creature to life in the form of a fridge magnet—imbued with the blessing: “Leap like the carp, succeed in every exam.”
