Zhuang brocade is a national level intangible cultural heritage of China. Together with Yunjin, Shujin, and Songjin, it is known as one of China’s Four Famous Brocades. Zhuang brocade dates back to the Song dynasty. With its rich patterns and colors, it reflects the Zhuang people’s pursuit of and longing for a better life. In 2006, the Zhuang brocade weaving technique was included in the first group of China’s national intangible cultural heritage list.

In the Zhuang language, Zhuang brocade is called mbaw laiz fax, meaning pages of heavenly patterns. It is woven with cotton or silk thread using the tongjing duanwei technique, with a continuous warp and discontinuous weft.

The fridge magnet is titled Jinping Queyu. “Jinping” evokes both the resplendent Zhuang brocade backdrop, reminiscent of an ornate folding screen, and the image of a peacock fanning its tail. “Queyu” lends the scene a sense of movement and an imagined voice. At rest, it suggests the peacock murmuring softly, as if recounting the mountains and rivers of the Zhuang homeland and conveying auspicious wishes. When set in motion, it produces a crisp, pleasing silver bell chime, bringing a touch of vitality and delight to the home.
