The Legendary Retreat of Emperors Kangxi and Qianlong: Zhongshan Park / Gushan (Solitary Hill)

SOLITARY HILL・GUSHAN

1-2 HOURS
2021/06/20

Nestled between the Inner and Outer West Lake, Gushan (Solitary Hill) was renamed Zhongshan Park in honor of Dr. Sun Yat-sen. Steeped in history, it stands as a masterpiece of classical West Lake gardens. The park houses steles inscribed by Emperor Kangxi and has inspired poetry from literary luminaries such as Bai Juyi, Ling Yunhan, Su Shi, Zhang Dai, and Zhang Jingyuan. Boasting 166 species of meticulously curated flora across 78 families and 135 genera, the garden showcases 62 arbor species (28 evergreen, 34 deciduous), 29 shrubs (25 evergreen, 4 deciduous), 14 climbing vines (10 evergreen, 4 deciduous), 51 herbaceous plants, and 10 other varieties. Every step reveals a new vista, blending natural beauty with artistic design. Gushan, along with the Broken Bridge and Long Bridge, is celebrated as one of the “Three Wonders of West Lake.”

Nearby Attractions: Xiling Seal Art Society, Zhejiang Provincial Museum, Louwailou Restaurant, and Su Xiaoxiao’s Tomb are all within a 15-minute walk.

How to Find the Secluded Pathway: Deep within Gushan, look for the two bold red characters “孤山” (Gushan) carved into the hillside. Follow the uphill path until you reach a platform with a descending staircase—this marks the entrance to the tranquil trail pictured.

Admission: Free (no entrance fee required).
