Soukai: A Tranquil Japanese Tableware Store in Ningbo

SOUKAI SPACE・JAPANESE TABLEWARE STORE

0.5 HOUR
2025/05/03

Never would I have imagined this store could become such a delightful spot to explore, but it truly is! Not for any special reason except that the space is extraordinarily charming, filled with thoughtful details, making it a rare peaceful sanctuary in the city—perfect for clearing your mind. Thanks to the vintage furniture and white gauze curtains, the entire atmosphere bathes in gentle, soft light.

The layout of this Japanese tableware store is textbook perfection—every step reveals a new vista. Though modest in size (about 30-50 square meters), each display is arranged with deliberate care. Items are staggered artfully with a cohesive color scheme that feels completely harmonious. Their hanging lamps and wind chimes are absolutely stunning, clearly showcasing the owner’s refined aesthetic sensibility.

The ceramic plates and teaware at Soukai differ significantly from what you typically find elsewhere. I’ve visited mainstream stores like MUJI, but the craftsmanship and glazing techniques displayed here are truly special. Each cup, bowl, and plate seems to possess its own story and soul, shimmering uniquely as white curtains sway gently around them.

The shopkeeper is incredibly engaging—you could chat until nightfall about everything from films and lifestyle to travel, even exploring the relationship between people, spaces, and cities. I’m curious about the owner’s background; they must have fascinating stories. The store occasionally hosts exhibitions, like the «Shihai Da» (04 pottery) and «Atsunobu Koizumi» wood-fired pottery duo exhibition held April 12-20, 2025. They particularly favor Japanese ceramic pieces, with the owner personally sourcing items from antique shops in Japan. While prices run a bit high, the quality and design of these vessels are exceptional—worth browsing for those with discerning tastes.

In the monotony of everyday life, people seek new choices to brighten, break through, and flourish… like having elegant tableware for display and accent as summer’s end approaches. Of course, quality dinnerware shouldn’t just excite at first sight—it should reveal its true character through the patina, luster, and presence that emerges through long companionship, showcasing its authentic nature through time and daily use.
